C.V./STATEMENT ON PRACTICE
PORTFOLIO

Born in Romania and growing up tri-lingually on the southern coasts of Canada, Ilinca Fechete has been living and working since 2020 in Munich, Germany, where she currently studies new media at the Academy of Fine Arts under Hito Steyerl and Critical Philosophy at The New Centre For Research & Practice under Reza Negarestani. Her interests are centered on observations of the photographic [the infrastructure of mass image production], critical philosophy, mediation, and real events while emphasizing conceptual methods to engage in political reflections and geopolitical preoccupations. Traversing algorithmic, semantic, photographic, and virtual nodes [negotiations] of the underlying conditions of exhibitive production, [re]presentation, and display, her practice often measures the tension between idea and implementation.  Here, the construction of thought, the relationship between image and identification, the traversal from the Real to the symbolic, and the difference between prominence and authority are employed and implicated [implied] within new attempts at meaning often speaking to the necessity of inequality, and the myths of artistic practice.

[Recently she has undertaken a 5-month research trip across Eastern Europe with a nuclear scientist and former colleague, Anna Nikou from the University of British Colombia, Canada [the results of which are to be exhibited in 2025]. She has also co-curated the trans-national exhibition series Autostrata with Anastasiia Batishcheva and is about to take part in an expedition to the Arctic Circle in June 2024].

Ilinca Fechete is a member of Studio CPN, NEU WORKSHOP and The New Centre for Research & Practice. She currently co-leads the academic lecture series Jour Fixe at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
